bed frame

It's finally done! I've been wanting this for years. I made my headboard a while ago but I've wanted to bed frame to match. I'm not at all a fan of bed skirts. I hate how they look. It's a little too sloppy for me. So my amazing Dad and I made this bed frame and I cannot be happier with the way it turned out. Plus, it raised my mattress up about 3 inches. I just love high beds!

from old to new again

Refinishing furniture has started to become one of my hobbies. The process can be long and tedious but the end result is usually worth it. I have done a night stand, a vanity and bench, and now I just refinished one of our old dining room chairs into a new desk chair for me.

I have been using a padded ottoman to sit at my desk but it was kind of difficult to stay there for more than a few minutes. My back wasn't supported and it was pretty low to the ground so the desk was about chest height when sitting. So I needed something different.

I quickly learned that chairs are not cheap! I've never had to buy one before and it isn't something I look for when I'm out shopping to compare prices so I had no idea how pricey they can be. I remember my parents getting a new dining set when I was little and storing the old one. The table and one chair is now my mom's sewing/gift wrapping table in her craft room and the other chair kind of floats around our house, being used when ever someone needs it for something. So I decided to take one of these chairs and refinish it. The seats had been recovered once but that was probably 15 years ago and the stain finish on them is older than me.

I got some sand paper and went to town! I sanded down every nook and cranny to try and get the glossy finish off so the paint would stick. That took about 2 and a half total hours (longer than I thought for one little chair.) Then I got some walnut brown, satin finish spray paint (one of my all-time favorite products) and sprayed the entire chair. One can was exactly 2 coats!

Then next came the seat. I got some 2-inch thick, high density foam from the fabric store to replace what was on the original seat. I covered that with batting and then fabric I fell in love with at the store. I am not so great at getting the corners to look right so my mom helped me out with that. She's such a good problem solver when it comes to stuff like that--love her! I originally wanted to make curtains out of this fabric but I really needed something darker so I went with some dark gray panels I found. But I couldn't stop thinking about this fabric so I thought this would be the perfect place to use it. I also got some extra because it was 50% off so I can make some pillows later!

And there you have it! Check out the before and after :)

updates

Alright I suck! I have totally been slacking on my blog posting even though I said I was going to post at least once a week...I didn't make it. Anyway I have a few things to tell all of you.

1. I went to the Josh Turner concert and I actually got to meet him! It was pretty epic. He signed my guitar! (I will try to post some pics of that later....)

2. I finally finished my new headboard. I know I said I was going to do a wood head and footboard but I totally changed my mind and went with just an upholstered headboard. It took quite a while to gather up the materials and finally finish it but it is done! My family and I put the final touches on it tonight and I think it turned out awesome! Check it out!

3. I learned the other day that Whitney is coming down sooner that planned so we can go see Step Up 3D! I can't wait. It's gonna be so cool!
4. I got some great new about the up coming glee episodes like...Britney, Michael, Figgins' Beat It, Nazi Hunter Carol Burnett, Mike Chang finally getting a bigger part (and a girlfriend--totally called that one!),...and much more but I think you get the point.
5. I had yet another Will Shuster dream. I was part of his glee club practicing the choreography and it was pretty awesome. All I could think of when I woke up was the line in the "Home" episode when April yells in the cabaret roller rink, "Will Shuster?! I had a sex dream about you last night!" Too funny
....I'm sure there is more that I am missing but I am going to call it good. If I think of anymore I will let you know. But now I am going to check out the meteor shower! Hope it's good!

new bed!

If you remember this post on my old blog you can see that my headboard doesn't exactly go with the rest of my furniture, especially the nightstand. The vanity matches pretty well but that will soon be changed..Anyway, one day I was looking on Fancy Bred Photography's blog when I saw this post where she linked to this site. I saw that headboard and thought it was so cute. I went to the store and priced it all out and now I am just waiting for it to all fall into place so I can go buy the wood and start building...or rather have my dad start building. I'm thinking about painting it dark to match the rest of the furniture so I picked up some paint chips and I think I found the perfect color. Oh and I am really excited about having a footboard. I know that sounds really lame but I've never had one before and kind of always wanted one so I can't wait for that to happen. Hopefully it will all happen soon so I can share the pictures but I will keep you all posted. (Sorry there is no pictures but there are lots of links)
